Women's Tennis closes out season strong
The Lady Wolverines’ tennis team closed out its 2023 season at the State Championship at Ventura College on April 28. Sofia Mazzola and Rylie Maloney both made it to the Round of 16 in singles competition while Mazzola and Cassandra Rhoades made it to the quarterfinals in doubles action.
“Match play was a big part of how the team grew,” Wolverines coach Sasha Macktinger said. “When they first started the season with me, they just wanted to ‘hit’ without purpose and a plan. They really grew as players because they learned strategy and how to find the weakness in their opponents which is a big part of my philosophy as a coach. This means not only playing their strengths but finding what is actually working and playing with purpose.”
Rhoades and Mazzola concluded the season with a 10-3 record in doubles action while Maloney went 11-1 in singles play. Mazzola was 8-2 in singles, along with Hannah Busenbark. Rhoades was 5-3 in singles.
“To finish in the Top 4 of Northern California and to compete as well as we did at state shows how strong this team is,” Macktinger said. “We are only losing two girls and we have some great recruits coming in. Every year, I constantly hear how my girls are not only great competitors but also have awesome sportsmanship. I can’t ask for anything more than that.”
