Sierra Moves onto 3C2A Pairs Championship this Friday
Day 1 play saw some solid volleyball from the Wolverine 1's and 2's pairs of Platt and Deter and Skinner and Black. The Wolverines were on opposite sides of the brackets and had to win two first round matches to get into qualifying position for the state championship tournament at Long Beach City College on May 9-10. Both teams faced tough roads through the 2-5 ladder positions for State Runner-Up last season, Fresno City College. The Wolverines came through with flying colors and landed themselves in great position for day two action. Platt and Deter upset the tournament and Coast Conference champions in FCC's 2's and Skinner and Black defeated Delta College 1's pair to get the regional Elite 8.
Day 2 action saw both pairs win their round of 8 and find themselves in the regional semifinals, a feat that has not been accomplished by a Sierra College squad since 2019 when coach Sarah Shively's squad accomplished it. Platt and Deter defeated Monterey Peninsula's 2's and Skinner and Black avenged a team regional loss and defeated Feather River College's 2's to advance. Platt and Deter eventually fell to tournament champion FCC's 1's in the 1st semi, while Skinner and Black advanced to the Regional Final and then, also fell to FCC's 1's. Both pairs were the highest finishing Big 8 teams in the Regional Championships. Sierra will compete this Friday at the CCCAA Pairs Championships against the best 32 pairs in the state. Pool play begins at 9 AM on Friday, March 9th.
